A great weekend of learning, fun and escapism

8th April 2024

Thoroughly enjoyed the weekend and felt a little bit closer to understanding our ancestors skills. Very accessible and Will is a master of ancient technology and a great (and understanding) tutor as well as a great host … highly recommended! I’ll certainly be going back again for my

21st Century life therapy….

Awesome

8th April 2024

What an amazing day of flint knapping with Will. Superb knowledge, great communicator, interesting stories, amazing artefacts, incredible demonstrations (which of course makes flint keeping look so easy) and a genuinely super nice guy (a rare combination in this modern world). I’m currently looking at Will’s other courses to book on.

Legendary Opportunity to Spend Time With This Man

8th April 2024

Will is a walking encyclopaedia of ancestral knowledge and skills for how to not just survive, but live, in our natural habitat. Having attended a few such events before, I had some idea of what to expect, but I have never encountered such integral knowledge. :

Not just a font of technical knowledge, not just skilled in every craft he speaks of, but a humbly embodied, unpretentious human being who teaches without feeling like a teacher, and displays expertise that other men could be arrogant or annoying with.

I’ve met foragers and bush medicine people and natural craftspeople, but not all fused into one person. He brings the knowledge of all 3 to every plant I saw him look at…

A great teacher to learn from; a great facilitator to enable and empower you and/or your kids and an easy man to be around. Highly Recommend anything he does.

Very informative day with an amazing teacher (Flint knapping)

8th April 2024

Will Lord was extremely knowledgeable, a very good teacher indeed & a unique person. He distilled 1M years of human stone tech down to a day without it feeling rushed.

I had never tried it before & am not a bushcrafter. I went for archaeological interest in the most evolutionary fundamental human tech. Yet even I ended up with a functional DIY paleolithic hand axe (shaped to fit my hand) & a couple of artistic looking DIY neolithic arrowheads! More importantly, I learnt such a lot. And not just about flint knapping but also about other stone age tech, local history & ancestor philosophy. And it was a fun & sociable day too!

My first-ever stone tools were not perfect, but far better than I expected (thanks to so many insights from Will) and, as Will repeatedly emphasised, rough tools like those were used for most of human time & were still the norm later as practical disposables.

A few hours in a group with Will will get you way further into flint tool appreciation, understanding & making than days alone with books & videos. I seriously recommend it.

Foraging from the Carcass

25th March 2024

It’s almost twelve months since I attended a Foraging from the Carcass course with Will. Barely a day passes without thinking about it.

I took the course as a kind of ‘passage of rites’ as a meat eater, previously happy to let someone else kill and butcher unseen, for my benefit.

Having now taken the heart out of a fallow deer, effectively turning an animal into a carcass, I was struck by the bond that grew within me.

I never had that strong sense of understanding, respect and responsibility beforehand. The entire animal was group processed during the course to good use, ie food, tools, cordage and for our group, the hide for drumskins.

I now have a better understanding of my place on this earth.

Thank you Will. The best course I’ve ever been on.

At the end of the weekend it seemed fitting that I took the skull. I knew Will understood why without saying a word. Once the worms have finished their work, that skull and I will have more adventures.
